Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to register with this website to take the survey? We're trying to get accurate data, and we need to minimize the problem of unsavory characters submitting survey answers multiple times.

But registering requires giving you my email address. How do I know you people aren't Evil Spammers? Um, we don't even know how to be spammers, much less evil ones. But worry not - we give you total control, in the following ways:

  • At any time, you may delete your registration. This permanently deletes all information you gave us (except for your survey answers). To do this, first Login with your User ID and password that you chose when you registered. Then click on your User ID (upper right of the screen - e.g. if your username is "Bob" click on the word "Bob"). Now click on "UnRegister", next to the red "X". Then click "OK" when it asks you if you really want to do that. Presto -  your information is permanently erased.
  • At any time, you may opt out of our (probably very infrequent) email updates regarding the Survey of Trinitarian Belief. To do this, Login, then click your User ID, then click "Manage Services". Click "Unsubscribe" on the left side of the screen. That's it - now you're still registered on this site, but you'll never get an email from us.

OK, that's all well and good. But what's your whole Privacy Policy?

  • We will never sell or transfer your email to anyone for any reason.
  • Only our programmer has access to the full table of data. The two of us analyzing the data never see your first and last name, your username, or your email. Thus, it would be difficult at best for us to correlate people with answers. In any case, we will never share any individual's answers or personally identifying information with anyone, for any reason. Data will only be used in aggegate form.
  • We do see names and emails of professors who have registered courses with the survey, as well as the course names. Still, we are not able to correlate the professor's personal information with any set of survey answers.
  • We do see the IP number from which each set of survey answers was submitted.
  • We will never disclose participating professors or schools to anyone, or share data sorted by professor or school with anyone. We're interested in comparing the views of different groups (e.g. Protestant and Catholic, Evangelical vs. Progressive, younger and older) but not in singling out any persons or institutions for either praise or blame.

Who are you and why are you doing this?

  • One of us is a professor at a state college who a few years ago became curious as to how the beliefs of the Christian public do and don't line up with the way various recent Christian philosophers and theologians have interpreted the doctrine of the Trinity. He came up with the survey to answer this question. Initially, the survey questions covered only recent theories, but they've since been expanded to include some going back to medieval philosopher-theologians and the ancient "church fathers" as well. It pretty much covers the gamut of opinions regarding the Trinity.
  • The other is a seminary student who will be writing his Master's thesis on the results of phase 1 of the survey, which covers seminarians and others studying Christian theology at the graduate level.

OK, but really, who are you? I want names! Don't mess with me!!! Settle down. Register, take the survey, and our names are on the results page or linked from there.

Are you guys heresy hunters? No. We're not out to embarass anyone or to purge the heterodox. We just want to know how people think about the Trinity. We're just individual researchers, and are not doing this in conjunction with any church group, denomination, or para-church group.

What's the deal with the Paypal and Amazon donation links on the Home page? We're doing this survey out-of-pocket, without any outside funding, and we need help paying for internet bandwidth and other expenses. Despite what you may have heard, the "pockets" of state college professors and seminary students aren't very deep. So please consider putting a small "tip" in one of those "jars".

I just took the survey, and my head hurts. What should I do?

  • Take a standard dose of your preferred painkiller. We're partial to Ibuprofen.
  • Pray, unless you don't believe in that sort of thing, in which case, you can still fervently hope your headache goes away.
  • Don't think about theology for 24 hours, or until symptoms subside.
  • Stop squinting at the screen. Get some better glasses, or make your brower display the type larger.
  • Leave this website immediately and surf over to something less intellectually taxing.

I registered, took the survey, and saw the results. Cool. But now I came back to see the results again, and I can't find that page. Where is it? Log in. Now, see that little dot or circle just to the left of the "Home" link? That's the link for the results page. You can also bookmark the results page, but you'll need to be logged in to see it.

I still need help. What can I do? If you require further assistance you may email us using the form on the upper right of this page. Just keep it short, and no "shouting" by TYPING IN ALL CAPS, please. And please read the above Q&A carefully before sending questions.
