Thanking The Community: The Rewards Of The Bequest Society

Beach Glass hunting at Lake ErieMy wife, Michele and I have spent most of our lives as residents of Northern Chautauqua County. We have been blessed with rewarding careers and two lovely daughters.  We can honestly say that we feel privileged to call this area our home.  The seasons, the quality of life, the people, and the many educational and cultural organizations make our area a truly special place.  The community has given us a great deal and we have always tried to give something back.

In 1986 I was fortunate to be part of the committee that formed the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation (NCCF).  Around that same time, my brother, Robert and I created the “Seth C. and Martha H. Johnson Fund” at the NCCF in honor of our parents.  Since that time we have also participated in building other named endowments for relatives, friends and community organizations.

When the NCCF formed the “Bequest Society for Northern Chautauqua County” last year, my wife and I were one of the first to join.  We joined because over the past 18 years we have witnessed the many good deeds that the NCCF has accomplished.  We know that the income from the gift we leave after we are gone will be used wisely.  The NCCF is responsive to the ever changing needs of the community.  The endowment provides funding to support children, youth programs, education, health care, and cultural projects. And decisions on who receives funding are made by local volunteers-those who best know the northern Chautauqua community.

A bequest is a provision in your will to provide a gift to a charity (in this instance, the NCCF) after you are gone.  The Bequest Society recognizes those who have made such gifts to the NCCF.  There is no minimum amount required to give to become a member.  Imagine the possibilities if everyone in northern Chautauqua left a small bequest to the NCCF.  Not only do you create a legacy through your bequest, you also have the satisfaction of knowing that your gift will be impacting the community for generations to come.
